A Message From Dr. Hem Dhakal
I was born in a remote village in Nepal’s Karnali Province, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of dense forests, the snow-fed Bheri River, and countless streams. Nature was my first teacher and playground. But its fragility became painfully real on the night of August 14, 2014, when a devastating flood swept away my beloved playground, Salkot. Witnessing that destruction—and later understanding its connection to climate change—deeply shaped my life’s purpose.
Growing up, hardship was a daily reality. My village had no electricity, and I studied by the light of pinewood fires and kerosene lamps. Reaching school required walking 2.5 hours each way through dense jungle. Poverty forced many men, including those in my community, to migrate to India for work, often facing exploitation and suffering. I also witnessed preventable deaths from snakebites, illness, and the spread of HIV/AIDS, leaving lasting scars on families and the community.
Despite these challenges, my love for nature was intrinsic. When I was about six years old, I planted fruit seedlings around my home. Over time, they grew into a small fruit forest, teaching me that even a child can help restore life to the land. At age seven, I began my entrepreneurial journey with a simple investment of 20 rupees (equivalent to $0.14 (14 cents) in two eggs, eventually growing it into a small poultry business that helped support my family. These early experiences taught me resilience, responsibility, and the power of initiative.
My grandfather, a respected village leader and problem-solver, instilled in me the importance of service, courage, and finding solutions. My mother taught me meditation, inner peace, and compassion. Though I faced bullying, academic struggles, and immense obstacles, my curiosity never faded. I became determined to learn English and pursue higher education. That journey eventually led me from my remote village to earning two master’s degrees—including one in Peace Studies and Conflict Transformation—and a PhD in Organizational Leadership and Development in the United States.
Live Peace Tech was created to help people discover their passion, purpose, and problem-solving potential. Our work empowers individuals to become job creators, environmental stewards, and peacebuilders. We believe, as the UNESCO Constitution states, that “wars begin in the minds of people,” and therefore peace must also be built in the mind, nurtured in the heart, and practiced through action.
My dream is to help cultivate thousands of global citizens who restore the earth, uplift their communities, and create a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world.
As Nelson Mandela said,
“It always seems impossible until it is done.”
Together, let's make it happen.
Thank you,
Dr. Hem Dhakal
